An AI can decode speech from brain activity with surprising accuracy

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant strides in decoding speech from brain activity, reaching surprising levels of accuracy. A study reported by Science News and Psychology Today demonstrated that AI can decode words and sentences from just a few seconds of brain activity data with up to 73% accuracy when listing the correct answer in its top 10 guesses. This breakthrough was achieved using a language model trained on 56,000 hours of speech recordings across 53 languages. The research involved 169 volunteers whose brain activities were scanned while they listened to various stories, with the AI making predictions about what they might have heard.

The study, which is still in its preliminary stages, suggests a potential noninvasive method to assist thousands of individuals worldwide who are unable to communicate through speech, typing, or gestures. This includes patients in minimally conscious or locked-in states, often referred to as unresponsive wakefulness syndrome. The AI’s ability to decode speech perception from brain activity is a significant step toward developing tools that could improve the lives of those with severe communication deficits.

However, the technology faces challenges, particularly regarding the practical application of magnetoencephalography (MEG), which requires expensive and bulky equipment. Moreover, the study primarily focused on decoding passive listening, which is different from decoding intended speech production. The transition from decoding heard speech to decoding intended speech remains a significant hurdle that researchers aim to overcome in future studies.
